Boy Scouts Annual report honored by Communication Arts and HOW

The 2008 Otetiana Council Boy Scouts annual report is featured in the Communication Arts Design Annual (50th anniversary edition). The report, which was designed by Jeremy Schwartz, SVP creative director of Partners + Napier, will also be featured in the upcoming HOW International Design Annual with an Outstanding Achievement Award.

The BSA's mission is to have a positive impact on the lives of the region's young people. To highlight the success of BSA in fulfilling its mission, Jeremy kept the design of the report minimal, making sure the portraits of program participants and their stories took the lead. He even hand lettered the entire report, including an expansive donor list, in pencil to show the humanity and personality of the organization.

The "Found" theme came about because the Council gave Jeremy and copywriter Scott Allen a list of people they wanted to feature, but apart from being local youngsters, volunteers, and prior program participants, they had little in common. Additionally, this was the first year that the BSA planned to directly ask for financial and volunteer support through the report. So the idea that these people had all found success through the BSA and without your support, future success could be lost, became the unifier.

This book nearly didn't get printed because the Council lost their printing budget. Many thanks to Xerox, XPEDX, Mohawk Fine Paper, and The Riverside Group for donating product, process, and time to help the BSA stay on track.
